I made these cute granny square slippers using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I like this yarn because it’s affordable, easy to work with, comes in lots of bright colors, and is very versatile. You can make these slippers using two different colors of yarn, one color, or three different colors.

What is nice about these slippers is that they fold flat for easy storage in a drawer, night stand, or travel bag. They also make a nice gift for mom, a friend, someone in the hospital, a grand child, or even as a teacher gift.

Crochet Stitches Abbreviations:

  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half-double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • trc = triple crochet
  • 2sctog = two sc together (decrease)
  • slst = slip stitch magic ring or circle
  • (how to make a magic circle)

How to Decrease (2sctog): begin your sc as normal but inserting the hook through the next stitch, pull the yarn through so you have 2 loops on the hook. Do not complete the sc but put your hook through the next stitch and pull through another loop on your hook. You will have 3 loops on the hook now. Now, yarn over and pull through all 3 of the loops you just added to your hook

Granny Square Slippers Instructions

These instructions are for a women’s size 7 to 9 slipper. You can adjust the size by making the granny square larger or smaller by adding or removing rows. You will need to make 6 granny squares for each slipper. These squares aren’t perfectly square and don’t need to be. If you prefer them to be more square, just add an additional chain at the corner – instead of chain 1, work chain 2 in the corners of rounds 2 and 3.

Foundation: Chain 3 (counts as st), work 11 dc in a magic ring; slst in the top of the starting chain 3. Pull the yarn tail tight to close up the circle. (12 dc)

Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as st), work 1 dc in the chain 3 space and then work 2 dc in each remaining sc around.

Change color: Grab the second color yarn, pull the yarn through the top of chain 3 and then continue the slst to end the round and attach the second color. (24 dc)

Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as st), work 1 dc in the chain 3 space and then work 1 dc in the next 5 dc. Work 2 dc, chain 1, 2 dc in the 6th dc (this makes the corner). Repeat pattern to the end of the round. Work 2 dc in the last corner, chain 1; slst in the top of the beginning chain 3. (36 dc)

Round 3: Chain 1 (does not count as st), work 1 sc in the chain 1 space and then work 1 sc in the next 9 sc. Work 1 sc, chain 1, 1 sc in the 10th sc (corner). Repeat pattern to the end of the round. Work 1 sc in the last corner; slst in the beginning chain 1. (44 sc) Make a total of 6 granny square motifs.

To Finish the Slipper: Crochet the squares together, following the photo above for placement, use the slip-stitch join method so your granny squares will lay flat so the join isn’t raised and bumpy.
